With chicken tikka masala being voted the UK’s most popular dish recently, it seems that everyone loves a curry. How many of us, though, have cooked a curry from scratch? It is all too easy to pop down to the local curry house for a take away but actually it can be as simple to cook your own curry as it is to put together one of your usual simple pasta recipes. Next time you are planning a dinner party at home, why not have an Indian themed event and impress your guests?

The great thing about an Indian meal is that you can prepare as many dishes as you want and let everyone have a bit of whatever they fancy. There’s no real need to serve a starter, although if you want you could serve some poppadums with a selection of chutneys or alternatively serve them with pre-dinner drinks as an alternative to the usual nuts and crisps.

It is a good idea to have a chicken dish (perhaps the favourite chicken tikka masala or a korma for those who do not like their food too spicy), a meat dish (maybe a lamb rogan josh or a meat bhuna), a couple of vegetarian recipes (okra and aubergines always go down well, even with those who profess not to be keen on their veg!) along with rice and naan. Shop bought naan bread is perfectly acceptable and is one less thing for the cook to worry about. Make sure you use basmati rice rather than normal long grain for a more authentic experience.

After this feast it is unlikely that your guests will need much in the way of dessert although you could try your hand at a traditional Indian dessert such as jalebi or kulfi. Instead, some fresh fruit attractively presented on a platter will probably suffice. Slices of melon, mango, and kiwi along with whole strawberries are sure to go down well.
